Which class do you usually attend?
Mostly noon but I make it to a lot of Saturday mornings too.

How did you find out about CrossFit?
I did a google search on why I was so fat and gross at one time. Shortly after that my Facebook feed was filled with various fitness solutions. Crossfit was one that peaked my interest. Christen and I did an “on ramp” at another gym before we showed up for a CFCA Saturday team workout. Been hooked ever since!

Did you play sports back in the day? Or was it all smoking butts under the bleachers?
Really neither. My family was in the restaurant business and a lot of my time was spent being a dishwasher or a busboy. It’s amazing how I’m so good at basketball.

How has CrossFit changed your life outside of the gym?
Last September, I underwent serious back surgery, two level fusion and some other hard to pronounce procedures. This wasn’t due to an injury, just a combination of bad genetics and mileage. My doctor knew I was doing CrossFit and recommended I continue prior to surgery. I did my last workout about 18 hours before the surgery. Here’s where CFCA fits in – I know my smooth recovery can be attributed to the hours I spent in the gym before my operation and the time I continue to put in. I sometimes get discouraged that I’m not back where I was pre-surgery then Christen bonks me on the side of the head and reminds me that I’m way ahead of schedule.

What and/or who motivates/inspires you?
The guys that are my age (or older) that absolutely crush it every day are truly inspiring. Even more so, Christen! I certainly I wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for her. I know she gets out of bed (reluctantly) on Saturday mornings to go to Team with me. Not because she wants to but because she knows it’s a big part of my mental well-being. Plus have you seen her back when she’s crushing pullups?!

Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve with the
gains made through CrossFit?
I had set some personal goals with lifts we did in the 5-3-1 program last year. I was getting pretty close to achieving them but the surgery set me back. My goal right now is to get back to where I was before surgery. I have also thought about getting my Level 1 certification. Not so much to coach but for a better insight into the Crossfit credo.

What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit?
If you put a musical instrument in front of me, mainly a guitar, there’s a good chance I’ll annoy you with it.

What’s your favorite aspect of CFCA?
Seems like every past MOTM says coaches, members, blah blah blah. And I will say the same thing. Not because it’s an easy answer and I’m at the end of Q and A’s but because it’s absolutely true. If the coaches and members can make someone as socially awkward as me feel comfortable, there’s something special going on.

CFCA favorite memory?
Probably the first time Billy Baker said “hi” to me. Seriously though – there was that one time when the stars aligned and the wind was right and I actually did a legless rope climb.

Any tips for the new members?
If you can go with a buddy or partner it definitely helps. It’s nice to have someone who gives you a nudge every now and then when you haven’t been in a few days and vice versa.

Please add anything we may have missed!
I hate when you flip the heavy tire and it lands just right that it doesn’t make any noise.
