Name: Ken Lawler
Nickname: Ken (Kenbo back in high school…….after drinking…..call me that at your peril)
Occupation outside of being a CrossFit champ: Commerical Foodservice Equipment guy
Hometown: Beverly, MA…..where the Navy started…..F you Marblehead!
Favorite workout: Murph because it’s the only one I can ever remember and it’s simple, hard and unforgiving
Favorite Lift: Cleans
Favorite WOD music: Mark Hogan’s playlists obviously
Which class do you usually attend? I attend the 6:30am primarily because the 5:30am is full of weirdos and miscreants. Mostly I’m talking about Bob…
How did you find out about CrossFit? Robb Wolf the Paleo Solution guy talked about it and it sounded cool.
Did you play sports back in the day? Or was it all smoking butts under the bleachers? I wanted so badly to be one of the cool smoker kids. You know, the 8 year old with the pack rollled up his T-shirt sleeve….tried smoking and it always ended up with me on my back trying to stop the spinning. Instead I chose a speedo and never looked back.
How has CrossFit changed your life outside of the gym? Last couple of years it’s given me one to two more gears. I can jog across a street or play sports with the kids without needing oxygen. I can push harder at some of the things I like to do. I take more naps though.
What and/or who motivates/inspires you? My 4 kids. They are all athletes and like their parents not overly athletically gifted. Everything comes down to hard work and effort. If I ask that from them I have to show them the same. Also my wife. She has a “no days off” approach to fitness. It’s annoying actually but as long as she gets new running shoes every 3-4 months and I can still see my toes….. all is well.
Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve with the gains made through CrossFit? I want to see if the extra cardiovascular gears CrossFit has given me translate into the water. I’m going to do some open water racing this summer (it’s in writing now so I have to I guess).
What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit? Growing my kids, mountain biking, boats.
What’s your favorite aspect of CFCA? Starts with the movements we do but I wouldn’t stick around if the people weren’t so great. I think a lot of people read what I wrote on Facebook recently so reference that for how I feel about our community.
CFCA favorite memory? Running on the fish pier…..loved the smell and how fitting that location was (in the middle of the hardest working seaport in America) for doing CrossFit.
Any tips for the new members? Technique before anything else so listen to the coaches and learn from them (they are good). Be humble if that’s your thing or run your mouth and let’s get after it. Do all the reps. Whatever you do do not question Mel’s ability to do push-ups……ever…..seriously.
