January Member of the Month

Name: Jason Berthiaume

Nickname: Jay

Occupation outside of being a CrossFit champ: NOAA Fisheries Enforcement Officer

Hometown: Live in Ipswich. Grew up in a small town outside of Worcester called Douglas.

Favorite workout: I like a good mix of workouts, but I think my favorites have a good mix of a few different stations/movements with both strength and cardio elements. Oh, and partner/team stuff is always fun too.

Favorite Lift: Turkish get ups lately. Anything kettlebell really

Favorite WOD music: I like a bit of everything. Favorites would probably be hip-hop, indie, electronica, and dubstep.

Which class do you usually attend? Nooner, and 8:30

How did you find out about CrossFit? At the last police academy I was at there was a guy who would workout by himself in the corner and I thought what he was doing looked fun and different. I later found out he was doing his home gym’s WODs. I then basically started following him around and made him teach me.

Did you play sports back in the day? Or was it all smoking butts under the bleachers? Little of both. I’ve always been active, but never a huge organized sports person. So I would play sports, then try to do kickflips under the bleachers at halftime.

How has CrossFit changed your life outside of the gym? So many benefits. The physical part is great, just feeling better and having more energy and motivation. But the mental piece has been huge too. After working out I feel so much better. Stuff seems to just roll off my shoulders, stable mood, less adult stress and anxiety, and more patience and able to be present with my children. If I get a workout in I can play Candy Land for hours.

What and/or who motivates/inspires you? I like seeing people crushing it on the machines. The machines and cardio endurance is not my favorite department and I really get a kick out of seeing people giving it their all then stumbling off and collapsing to the floor speaking gibberish.

Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve with the gains made through CrossFit? Right now I would like to get more days on the snow this winter. Consistent double unders would be nice someday too.

What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit? Snowboarding, mountain biking, wakeboarding, XC skiing, and just messing around outdoors, hiking or whatever with friends and family.

What’s your favorite aspect of CFCA? The atmosphere that the coaches and members bring for sure. Everyone is supportive, friendly, willing to help out, and quick to crack a joke. Such an awesome, motivated, and diverse group of people involved in all kinds of cool stuff in and out of the gym.

CFCA favorite memory? Basketball on Fridays is always entertaining. Never having played, its so out of my comfort zone and I enjoy a good laugh with everyone.

Any tips for the new members? Don’t be too hard on yourself or get hung up on progress and making gains early on. Just bring yourself, have a few laughs, make some friends, and get comfortable with the movements and build confidence over time. The rest will come.
