Name: James Michael Maguire (but only Mom calls me James Michael)
Nickname: Dr. Mike (Started at CFCA – seems like a nickname to me)
Occupation: Internal Medicine Physician
Hometown: St Louis
Favorite Workout: Any of the longer grinders
Favorite Lift/Exercise: Deadlift and pullups.
Favorite WOD Music: Loved some of the Michael Jackson songs as a little kid, I never thought I would hear them 30 plus years later during Crossfit workouts but it works! Its all good!
Which class do you usually attend? Nooners work best with my schedule.
How did you find out about Crossfit? A fellow member also a patient of mine told me about it when I asked him how he was staying in such good shape. He mentioned the great community down at CFCA, he was right on!
Did you play sports back in the day? Or was it all smoking butts under the bleachers? Smoked a few things back in the day, but did play soccer and tennis through high school.
How has cross fit changed your life outside the gym? I feel better in general. My tennis game has improved. I recover much better and faster after longer runs or rides.
What and/or who motivates/inspires you? A few older patients in their 70’s and 80’s even 90 that are still extremely active and able to keep up with hobbies/sports they grew up loving. They seem to follow the CFCA philosophy of eating healthy and keeping active. Nice to see it work for them. It motivates me to follow their example.
Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve with the gains made through CrossFit? I want to be able to keep playing (skiing, biking, hiking, running etc) with my wife and kids for many years to come!
What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit? Powder Skiing when I can find it. Tennis once a week. Running. Mountain Biking. Golf. Boating and fishing with the kids in summer. Attempts at surfing (struggling), Although watching my 3 kids sporting events seems to take up much of my weekends these days.
What’s your favorite aspect of CFCA? The Camaraderie
CFCA favorite memory? Doing the medicine ball warmup back when I was a new member with Coach Jon. He throws an overhead toss with 20# red ball when I wasn’t looking, got it right in the face. Ouch! Wait, maybe that’s my most painful memory:)
