Name: Sonja Merz
Occupation outside of being a CrossFit champ: Publisher’s Representative (my sales territory is Asia)
Favorite workout: I like workouts that include some running.
Favorite Lift: Hmmm….I’m more of a Dumbbell/Kettlebell than a barbells kind of lifter. I did use barbells for the CFCA games this month and the deadlift was my favorite.
Favorite WOD music: I love the music at the gym but I barely recognize any of it! (Does that make me old??) As long as it’s loud, I like it.
Which class do you usually attend? 8:30AM Monday is my “can’t-miss” class. Starts my week off right.
How did you find out about CrossFit? Johnna made me do it!!! I thought it would be too hard, but she promised it would be OK.
Did you play sports back in the day? Or was it all smoking butts under the bleachers? Team sports all the way!
How has CrossFit changed your life outside of the gym? Honestly, it’s made me appreciate Cape Ann a lot more. Even though I grew up here, I never knew anyone who rowed the Seine boats or paddled the Blackburn Challenge or who ran the trails in Dogtown or mountain biked in the woods or surfed year round. There are so many opportunities for outdoor adventure right here on Cape Ann, and all the people who do these exciting things are right here at CFCA! I’ve already started trail running, and I went waterskiing for the first time this summer, so maybe surfing next year?
What and/or who motivates/inspires you? The coaches! They have a knack for pushing me just a bit farther/faster/stronger at the exact moment that I need that push.
Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve with the
gains made through CrossFit? I recently crossed off my in-the-gym goal of coming to 13 classes in November. It felt great to put that check mark up on the blackboard! Suggestions for a new in-the-gym goal are welcome. I still have my OTG goal up there–signing up for a 10K race.
What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit? Hobbies? I have 3 kids–I don’t have hobbies anymore. Unless you count watching my kids play soccer & basketball every weekend! I do love watching them play! I also like to read. And my daughter and I are trying to figure out how to knit hats.
What’s your favorite aspect of CFCA? In a word, variety. There are so many interesting people to meet and the workouts are never boring. I also really appreciate the OTG activities like summer trail running and the Books & Bevs group.
CFCA favorite memory?
It’s the little things, like finally nailing the hook shot for a Bingo square in July. Or stringing together some double unders during a workout. I enjoy the feeling of making progress all the time, getting faster, stronger, and more fit.
