Favorite workout: I like sprints on the bike and anything with strict
pullups. Wallball Nicole is fun, too. I hate running and wallballs,
but somehow the combo just works!
Favorite Lift: Clean and Jerk, though I haven’t done much lifting lately. Trying to get back into it.
Favorite WOD music: Rage is great for getting through some of the harder WODs!
Which class do you usually attend? Monday 6:30pm, aka Ladies Night! It’s the one class I absolutely have to get to every week. But with Gunnar finally in daycare, I’m psyched to add the Friday 8:30 class to my routine (thanks for the push, Jill!).
How did you find out about CrossFit? I almost moved to North Carolina for a job quite a few years ago, and had been planning to join Christmas Abbott’s gym in Raleigh. When we chose to stay local, I decided to look into CrossFit here in town. So glad things turned out the way they did…CFCA was and is a gem right in our own backyard!
Did you play sports back in the day? Eh…my brother convinced me to play one year of JV basketball when I was a freshman. I didn’t want to disappoint him, so I warmed the bench all season. I still have emotional scars from that experience, thus my hesitation to come to the gym on Fridays. Needless to say, I am not very “sportsy”.
How has CrossFit changed your life outside of the gym? CFCA has really helped push me outside my comfort zone. It’s given me the confidence to try new things like climbing, surfing, seine boat racing, HAVING A BABY…I mean, I could go on and on. My whole lifestyle is so much healthier than it was before, and I’m much more adventurous in general.
What and/or who motivates/inspires you? All the strong and fabulous ladies! Karen, just coming in and being awesome day in and day out, whether 9 months pregnant or just coming back after a baby (or two). And Barbara – when I say I want to be Barbara when I grow up, I am not kidding! She is just amazing. Alex, who dominates inside and outside the gym, while working her butt off and going to school. There are so many incredible gals in our ranks…how can you not be inspired??
Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve with the
gains made through CrossFit? Having been here for 5+ years now, I’ve been fortunate enough to cross off a number of goals that I considered lofty at the time. These days, my goals are mainly to maintain a level
of fitness that allows me to keep up with Gunnar (and Curtis), and to be able to try new things without worrying about whether I’m physically capable. It’s great to just be able to go for it!
What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit? I just started going to a weekly spin class in Boston near my office, since it’s so hard to get to the gym after work these days. It’s no substitute for CFCA, but it’s been a nice supplement to my routine! Other than that, I love hiking, biking, and crafting when the mood hits me (usually right before the holidays, where I go into manic DIY mode for about a month and then not again till next year). I love hanging out with my boys, finding new playgrounds for the G-Man, and keeping all the local coffee shops in business! :)
What’s your favorite aspect of CFCA? I love how we all band together to support one another, whether it’s just getting through a tough WOD, or giving support to new parents or people in the community who are in
need. Having been on the receiving end, I can’t put into words how grateful I am to know so many kind and generous people. This community is truly special.
CFCA favorite memory? Oh gosh, so many! Thursday night Grinders will always have a special place in my heart. Love all our OTG gatherings, and the girls hiking trip in NH a couple weekends ago was amazing. Looking forward to many more fun times with the CFCA crew!
Any tips for the new members? Pay attention to the coaches, and learn the cues. It’s a lot of information to process initially, but it will soon become second-nature. Take the time to really get the basics down and you’ll have a much easier time of it. Have a positive attitude, and have fun!!
