Which class do you usually attend?
Used to be a faithful 5:30 or 6:30 am-er, but evolving family schedule has me going to the 8:30 and noon more often.
How did you find out about crossfit?
My brother Michael started doing it back in Utah. It looked like fun!
Did you play sports back in the day? Or was it all smoking butts under the bleachers?
I went to a small high school so I was able to play sports year round. I played volleyball, basketball and softball. It was a small town, so if I was smoking under the bleachers, my mom would have known about it before I even got home.
How has Crossfit changed your life outside of the gym?
I feel so capable! It has given me an added sense of strength and confidence both physically and mentally. I’ve had to get uncomfortable to see results on the other side and I’ve used that in my life in so many instances. No challenge = No change!
What and/or who motivates/inspires you?
My family! I’m a better mom for my kids when I exercise. I’m more patient and seem to be able to deal with chaos a little better after I break a sweat. I also want them to see me make exercise and healthy living a priority. Chasing them around the playground or carrying sleeping children in from the car keeps me going to the gym. My husband also appreciates me getting my squat below parallel.
Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve with the gains made through Crossfit?
My current gym goal is unassisted dips. (Plural!) I know it will be like my pull-up, working on it little by little and one day I’ll surprise myself and just do it.
What are your hobbies outside of Crossfit?
I’m an avid podcast listener and always have a bunch on deck when I do dishes or other domestic stuff. I love to read and usually have 3-4 different books going at the same time. I also love to write and am always conjuring up stories or poems and have written a lot of memior-ish things about my family life.
What’s your favorite aspect of CFCA?
Since the beginning, I have loved our amazing community here at CFCA. It was easy to come back after those first few classes since everyone was so nice and have continued to be delighted at the generosity and community minded attitude that is cultivated at the gym.
Any tips for the new members?
Everyone you meet at the gym started somewhere! Don’t be afraid to ask questions, especially about scaling a workout. Don’t try to keep up with or beat your neighbor. Just focus on the fundamentals and being better than you were last month. Better form > heavier weight.
