Which class do you usually attend?
R: Tue/Thur/Fri Noon class & Some open classes on Saturday (Love dodge ball)
T: Noon – Tue/Thur/Fri
How did you find out about CrossFit?
T: My Brother and sister-in-law
Did you play sports back in the day? Or was it all smoking butts under the bleachers?
R: High School: Rugby, Gaelic Football, Hurling (lost my 4 front teeth), Tennis, Soccer. In College: Soccer . No smoking butts and we didn’t have bleachers in Ireland but I did spend countless hours sitting on walls (the Irish equivalent of bleachers)
T: I grew up playing sports, softball, cross country, swimming, water skiing, tennis, basketball. I played Division 3 Basketball in College, ran the Marine Corp Marathon, became obsessed with Bikram Yoga, my cousin opened a studio in Philadelphia.
How has CrossFit changed your life outside of the gym?
R: More energy to keep up with the kids, more confidence to try other activities (Spartan Races) and less silly injuries and now I have a reason for why my body is creaky.
T: Crossfit and to be more specific CFCA made me feel like an athlete and helped me find my soul again. In 2011, I thought I’ll give wake boarding a try after a lifetime of water skiing. This led to a spiral femur fracture in the water and the knowledge that I had a giant celled Tumor that hollowed out the condyle of my femur. I had to have surgery, a bone graph from a donor and as a result I couldn’t walk for 7 months (had a 1 yr old, 2yr old and 4yr old at the time). I also suffered a Pulmonary Embolism. (Robbie moved into Superhero Husband and Father). During therapy, I would get comments like ‘this is as good as its going to get’ and I remember thinking I wish I was a professional athlete recovering from an injury. They are pushed and rehabbed sometimes better than they were before and in record recovery time. But I wasn’t a professional athlete, I was a 37 year old Mom of 3. Crossfit gave me my MOJO back.
What and/or who motivates/inspires you?
R: Tracy – crazy competitor (still can’t out last her on the rowing machine), never gives up, probably the most patient person I know and is fantastic with our boys.
T: Victory-winning life’s battles\struggles big and small.
Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve with the gains made through CrossFit?
R: Ran a Super Spartan Race 8 miles – want to try this again. Would love to give Surfing a go.
T: Start running races again for time, maybe water ski again
What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit?
R: Soccer, Cooking & Watching the boys do the most amazingly ridiculous things you could imagine.
T: Taking care of 4 growing boys,
What’s your favorite aspect of CFCA?
R: The camaraderie with the nooners – The Rockport Clowns, Dr. Mike, Mark D and Emily. Those guys are just great and really make the workouts fun with Coach Jon.
T: The people and Jon’s positive motivation.
Any tips for the new members?
R: Work as hard as you can – don’t compare yourself to someone who has been doing CF for a long time. Continuous work will lead to great gains over time. And always push yourself to your max.
T: Stay positive, be your own cheerleader. Inside voice: ‘You can do it, don’t give up”
