Name: Whitney (Peabody) Buckley
Occupation outside of being a crossfit champ:
I manage a crazy harbor cruise company, Mahi Cruises, out of Pickering Wharf in Salem.
Hometown: Hamilton, by way of Essex.
Love ‘the girls’ WODs, but would probably say my favorite is Fran (shooting for sub-5)… Or maybe Nancy…
The snatch. There’s something about throwing heavy weights over your head that makes you feel strong.
Which class do you usually attend?
I consider myself a 6:45AM-er, however lately a busy summer schedule has me dropping in all over the place!
How did you find out about crossfit?
I first tried CF while living in Santa Cruz, CA. A friend owns a ‘box’ there (at which Annie Sakamoto is a partner) and I tried it a few times there, but at the time it just didn’t stick. A few years later I ran into Chad Cooper outside the old Parker St gym on my way to a yoga class, who introduced me to Jon. I decided to try a drop-in class and shortly after I planned my intro session. A few weeks later I was hooked.
Did you play sports back in the day? Or was it all smoking butts under the bleachers? Suppose I was a bit of a jock back in the day. I was a three-sport athlete in HS and went on to play D1 Field Hockey in college. I played four years at BU, where we trained pretty intensely, with a lot of Olympic Lifting. Our weight training regime (and probably my affinity for Easy Mac, late night cafeteria food and beer) transformed me from a 135# high schooler into a solid 155# athlete. Wasn’t too excited about the ‘gains’ at the time, and when I graduated I swore off the gym, heavy lifting and competition of all sorts. I found yoga soon after and practiced pretty regularly for a few years, but eventually found myself feeling pretty physically weak. Nowadays I enjoy a healthy balance of both.
How has Crossfit changed your life outside of the gym?
Since CF I am definitely feeling stronger in every aspect of life outside the gym – whether helping to lug case after case of beer onto the boat for a big event, running around with nieces and nephews, or crushing the competition in the Women’s Seine Boat Races at Fiesta! Plus, it helps me justify my ice cream addiction.
What and/or who motivates/inspires you?
My future self! If I’ve learned anything over the years, its that what you do today is going to have an effect on you tomorrow. Finally getting to a place where I can visibly and tangibly see and feel the results of what I do with and what I put into my body has had a huge impact on how I tackle the everyday.
Name one goal/personal achievement you would like to achieve with the gains made through Crossfit?
Repeat Women’s Seine Boat Champs 2014!
What are your hobbies outside of Crossfit?
Running, rowing, hiking, biking, baking, Yoga… I suppose I don’t focus my attention on any one hobby in particular. Bonus points for being outside, involving friends or being really, really tasty.
What’s your favorite aspect of CFCA?
The community! Such a great group of people here that will support you inside and outside the gym…they know when to work hard, and, perhaps, when to let loose too.
Any tips for the newbs?
Don’t be intimidated. There is such an amazing group of supportive people here at CFCA. Do your best, don’t try to push yourself farther than you’re body is ready for. Progress doesn’t happen overnight! OH, and wear extra socks when you rope climb.
