Name: Jaime MacDonald
Occupation outside of being a Crossfit champ: I manage the Policy/Underwriting Administration department at TRU Services, LLC out of Beverly, A Managing General Underwriter (MGU) for Stop Loss Insurance, mother of two girls and a wife to another CFCA’er Tim MacDonald
Hometown: Doylestown, Pennsylvania
Favorite WOD: That’s hard to say, those benchmark beauties (I really mean bitches) sometimes get my stomach all in knots before the clock starts….and thus we may need to have a brownies board…omg did I just say that? No seriously though, I suppose I like Annie the best at the moment, and I can’t wait to crush it when I can PR my double unders to more than 17 in a row! I’m coming for you Annie!
Favorite Lift: Deadlift, although I can’t seem to sneak past my 1RM… that dreaded 5lbs to PR to the next level is my worst enemy, a mental blocker for sure. I’m working towards a “zen” approach and I’m confident I’ll get it!
Which class times do you usually attend? I usually go to the 6:45 pm class on Monday and Wednesday and then team on Saturday. That’s my ideal anyway. With two kids and a husband who travels for work often, my schedule can be a little dodgy. But I’m pumped for the opportunity to make up the time I may have missed within that month! In fact I went 4 times last week because I made up a class (including TEAM) and it was great! I also felt so much stronger because of it!
How long have you been Crossfitting? Since May 1st 2011 which was my official start date….and haven’t looked back!
How did you find Crossfit? Oh you know, how most of us stumbled upon it….Miss Heather Fraelick! Best.idea.ever!
Do you have an athletic background or was it all smoking behind the bleachers in high school? I was a dancer as well as played soccer and tennis throughout my childhood.
How has Crossfit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness? After high school, everything just stopped…. I moved to Massachusetts and really just plugged along through life, not a care in the world about exercise or about my overall health for that matter. During both my pregnancies I gained 45 lbs. Making it rather difficult to lose the extra poundage after they were born, especially since I wasn’t in that great of shape to begin with. I was never overweight other than after my babies were born. With both, it took two years for most of the excess weight to come off and feel a sense of “normalcy”. After the second child though, I was just in a miserable slump about my body. I had little to no confidence and felt so uncomfortable in my own skin. I tried regular gyms and would walk around aimlessly from one machine to the next and would literally pick things up and put them down, because I didn’t know what to do with them! Crossfit was certainly an intimidating idea being as the warm ups were way harder than anything I was even doing on a daily basis! I trudged through and literally let my “ego” go, and kept showing up. The “team” or “group” approach to training was something I was used to from being involved in sports and something about knowing someone else is doing the same workout as you at the same time, was reassuring. You have common ground, even if you do different weights or higher boxes, etc. Now, along with CrossFit and Paleo eating, I’m 25 lbs lighter, stronger both mentally and physically and the happiest and healthiest I have ever been. My kids see the effort I’m putting in so I hope that by leading by this example, putting our health first, those habits will transpire into their own daily lives. Plus the results are enabling me spend more quality time with them! Win-win.
What motivates/inspires you? I’m inspired by the determination and dedication that people have shown in our gym, and it’s clear that their efforts are paying off by the results they have seen. I love watching people transform physically as well as watching their lives also change for the better in many ways. Healthy body=healthy mind. I’m motivated by the accountability that I have from my friends at the gym, and that we check up on each other to make sure we’re staying on track. I also get motivated by what I put into my body. Since drinking the kool-aid and trying out Paleo, I can tell when I put things into my body that fuel me or slow me down. It’s been an invaluable tool to finally start to understand your body.
Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through Crossfit. I’d like to be able to RX a WOD that has pull-ups via DH or Kip. I can do 5 consecutive DH’s and still working on consecutive KIPs. Practice, practice, practice. I’d also like to get through Annie with consecutive DU’s!!! (sorry that was two goals)
I know it’s hard to imagine, but do you have hobbies/interests outside of Crossfit? If I’m not at work or CF, I LOVE hanging with the family! I am an artist by heart, but finding the time during the busy week and entertaining children on the weekend has been difficult. I love to paint and draw and design. It’s definitely a goal of mine outside of the gym to set some time aside for me to use my creativity more.
What’s your favorite aspect/part of CFCA? The community. I know it’s been said a lot, but it’s so true. There really is nothing like the community at CFCA!! Being a transplant and not knowing many people, CFCA has allowed me the opportunity to meet and make some of the best friends I’ve known since joining. I’ve met some amazing people and it’s always a breath of fresh air to be around people of “like mind” and want the same thing…..betterment. Betterment of themselves and truthfully, betterment for you. It’s pretty awesome.
What’s your best tip for new members? Show up. Listen, work hard and keep at it.
