Name: Christina Carpenter
Nickname: Chris – or to some, Harry
Occupation: No Fault Auto Claims Adjuster
Favorite WOD: I love the ones with rounds for time like Eva or AMRAPS like Cindy – anything with pull-ups in the mix as I am still trying for my kipper
Favorite Lift: Deadlift, ‘cause it makes me feel strong! Though a front squat is a close second, conversely because I have so much work to get to where I want to be on that one.
How long have you been Crossfitting? Since late January
Which class time do you usually attend? 7 pm
How did you find Crossfit? And how does Crossfit differ from your last gym or exercise routine? My brother heard about it and thought it would help me train for the Blackburn Challenge. Prior to that I went to a typical athletic club, doing mostly cardio and limited weight lifting, with a few bootcamps and boxing workouts thrown in for good measure….but it definitely did not have the feel of CFCA, the camaraderie and just the whole atmosphere…not to mention the thinking behind the workout. Let’s just gloss over the 3 month gap between that and the start of CF.
What is your athletic background? I wouldn’t call it athletic…no organized sports, etc. But before entering the “exciting” world of insurance I landscaped which is pretty much a day-long workout in and of itself, augmented by canoeing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Sitting at a desk all day is definitely not good for you!
How has Crossfit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness? CF has made a remarkable change in my life – not only am I stronger and more fit, I find I am much less stressed at work and home, and really enjoy knowing that I can go out and try pretty much anything and have the strength, agility and energy to do it. And I love the Paleo part, too.
What motivates/inspires you? I like feeling strong and capable, and I want to keep feeling like that for the rest of my life. I don’t want to miss out or be ‘trapped’ in a body that can’t keep pace with my mind. When I see people in their 60’s and 70’s out there doing what they want, truly living a full and satisfying life, I definitely am inspired. And it wouldn’t hurt to look good in a bathing suit, either.
Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through Crossfit. Complete the Blackburn Challenge in a Grand Banks dory solo
Hobbies/Interests outside of Crossfit? Rowing, fishing, beaching….pretty much anything to do with being out on the water. Gardening, reading, camping. Hiking in the fall. Ice fishing, sledding. Outdoor stuff.
What is your favorite cheat meal? Top of the list is an ice cold pitcher of Fisherman’s Ale after a hard row, preferably enjoyed on the deck of the CABC….maybe with a burger AND the bun. It’s funny, my tastes have definitely changed since Paleo. Before Paleo I would have probably said a big fat piece of chocolate cake, but now my dreams are for crunchy things like chips with my salsa, or crackers and cheese.
Any advice for new members? Stick with it! And judge yourself against you – your fitness compared to last month, or the last time you did deadlifts, or pullups, or whatever – not against what everyone else is doing. At one point or another we’ve all wondered WTF we were thinking signing up voluntarily for this – but once you’re done, you feel great!
Have you met Pukie? Does gagging up phlegm count? If so, then yes! But otherwise I have been fortunate not to meet him.
