Kevin Practicing his Ninja Skills.
Name: Kevin Phoenix
Nickname: Some of my friends call me “Phoenix” (my friends are very clever)
Occupation: Myself and 2 partners own a promotional products company based in Danvers called SwervePoint.
Hometown: My father was in the Navy, so we moved around quite a bit, but we ended up in Northern Virginia from 6th grade on. Moved to Gloucester after graduating from the University of Virginia in 1993.
Favorite WOD: Jonny Cakes! (yes, that’s called butt-kissing)
Favorite Lift: I guess back squat, even though it needs a lot of work.
How long have you been Crossfitting? About 2 months.
Which class time do you usually attend? 7AM Tues/Thurs. Would love to get to a third class every week, but there are no other 7AM classes…(subtle hint).
How did you find Crossfit? A few of my friends in Northern Virginia have been doing it for a couple years and swear by it. I saw an article about CFCA in the Gloucester Times and signed up immediately.
What is your athletic background? I played soccer and baseball through high school, intramural and pick-up games in various sports after that.
How has Crossfit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness? It’s only been 2 months, but I can already tell that I’m feeling stronger, standing taller and am dropping some pounds. I’ve also been told that it’s made me more charming and better at scrabble, but I have no evidence to back that up.
What motivates/inspires you? I’m motivated by the fact that my father died when he was 62, after an adult life dominated by type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. I don’t want to go out like that. I want to be around to chase my grandkids around the yard and regale them with stories about phones with cords and a world without facebook. I’m inspired by 60-, 70- and 80-year olds that I see at road races and triathlons, cranking along and not accepting the idea that “gardening” is a form of exercise.
Name one goal/personal achievement that you would like to achieve through Crossfit. I was hoping to finally reach my lifelong goal of becoming a Ninja, but my wife and daughter aren’t on board with that idea. So I’ll settle for just setting myself up for a longer, happier life.
Hobbies/Interests outside of Crossfit? Outside of work and family, I like to run and have recently started doing triathlons, which I highly recommend for anyone looking for a challenge and something a little different. The Gloucester Tri is a great place to start, and the distances are reasonable so anyone with a little bit of fitness and some training can do it.
What is your favorite cheat meal? Well, I’m guessing the “Paleo Crew” would say that every meal I eat is a cheat meal, but aside from that I’d say cheese…any cheese. Stinky cheese on a cracker, mild cheese melted with chorizo, fondue, one of my daughter’s string cheese snacks…doesn’t matter.
Any advice for new members? Don’t be intimidated. The people at CFCA are so welcoming and supportive, and even though some of the workouts look a little scary at first, anyone can do them…you might just have to modify them a bit. But if you can deal with being a little sore for awhile, pretty soon you’ll see improvements that will surprise you and make you never want to miss a class.
